The £1,000 rule, plainly
The trading allowance is £1,000 of gross sales, not profit. Under £1,000 of gross trading income and you have nothing to report. Over it, you register and either deduct the flat £1,000 or your real expenses — whichever is bigger. You cannot use both.
Vinted / eBay guide
Clearing your own wardrobe is not trading. Buying to resell, making things, or flipping stock is. From 30 sales or roughly €2,000 a year, the platform reports your totals to HMRC automatically — so the numbers HMRC sees should match what you declare.

Do I pay tax on Vinted UK?+
Selling your own used clothes for less than you paid is not trading, so there is normally no tax. But if you buy to resell, make items, or sell at a profit as a business, that is trading income. Once your gross trading income passes £1,000 in a tax year you must register for Self Assessment.
Is the £1,000 trading allowance gross or profit?+
Gross. It applies to your total sales before fees, postage or the cost of stock. If you took £4,200 on Vinted, £1,000 is covered by the allowance and you are taxed on £3,200 — unless your actual expenses are higher, in which case you deduct those instead.
Do I need to register if I have a full time job?+
Yes. PAYE only covers your employment income. If your side hustle gross income is over £1,000 you must register for Self Assessment separately, and your side profit is taxed on top of your salary at your marginal rate.
What is the 30 sales / €2,000 rule for eBay and Etsy?+
Digital platforms report seller data to HMRC. If you complete 30 or more sales, or receive more than about €2,000 (roughly £1,700) in a calendar year, the platform sends your details and totals to HMRC. It is a reporting threshold, not a tax threshold — tax still depends on whether you are trading.
When is the Self Assessment deadline?+
Register by 5 October 2026 for the 2026/27 tax year. The online return and payment deadline is 31 January 2028.
